Four Freedoms

A short poem

'Four Freedoms' is a four-line poem written for Karen Wimhurst's choral work 'Freedoms', first performed by Palida choir in March 2023:

​

   words pour from our open lips

   shaping each our sacred dance

   take our place at the long table

   growing peace lilies in the park

​

These are based on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘Four Freedoms’

   Freedom of speech

   Freedom of worship

   Freedom from want

   Freedom from fear

​

The work was in response to the speech made by American Abolitionist and liberal activist Wendell Phillips in 1852:  “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty; power is ever stealing from the many to the few."

​
